ABSTRACT
This chapter suggests that gender politics in Serbia is an expression of perspectives about the past and present and hopes for the future. That is, personal-political imaginations about conflict and post-conflict profoundly shape the profile of gender politics in Serbia. Feminist and women's organising has dramatically changed since the late 1970s in response to the social and political context that activists live in. Exploring the effects of the Yugoslavian communist experience upon feminist organising in Serbia reveals the context and roots shaping contemporary feminism and feminist philosophy. Feminist and women's organisations locate themselves at a very specific juncture in these debates: from deliberately not engaging with political responsibility issues to making vocal statements made about the necessity of political responsibility. Hence, attitudes about Serbia's role in relation to the conflicts of the 1990s, the problems of the post-conflict present, and hopes for future direction of post-war reconstruction are all political, whatever the stance and opinion taken.
