ABSTRACT

The thought of 'programming' often scares away talented composers and sound designers to games. For the record, 'middleware' gained popularity in the 1980s as a way to link old and new systems and applications but has only recently become a mainstream solution to the intricacies of many facets of game development. While 'middleware' is the tool, 'scripting' can be considered the actual act of creating and defining sound behaviors either using the tools or as part of some other form of manual programming. One of the easiest and most convenient methods of scripting is to have access to an editable text file. The term 'middleware' officially refers to software solutions which aid in asset creation, implementation, and management. Audio assets are limited, but must feel limitless. Randomizing and lowering repetitiveness are the key, and middleware tools are what help to create more with less.
