ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Mormon lifestyles, missions, meetings, rituals, and finally temples. Mormons will often proudly boast that theirs is not a "Sunday-only religion," but that their faith touches upon if not dictates virtually every aspect of their conduct. The Mormon missionary program is without a doubt one of the most extensive and successful religious evangelization efforts in the modern world. Mormonism is a social religion – in the sense of the Latin root religare, which means to tie or bind together – that can only be fully lived in interaction with other people. If the Latter Day Saints Sunday worship service is largely prosaic and universally accessible, the temple ceremony is the site of a particular style and form of Mormonism available only to members of the church deemed faithful and "worthy." When Mormons enter the temple, they show their temple recommend and are granted entry.
