ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces readers to the main theories of development that have been advanced over time, and indicates how these have been put into practice. By the end of the chapter, readers should be aware of the most important characteristics of different theories and strategies of development. At the outset, the terms ‘theory', ‘strategy', ‘ideology' and ‘paradigm' are defined in respect of the field of development studies.
