ABSTRACT

Podcasts were used to improve pronunciation in the Maori language program at a New Zealand primary school as part of an action research project. The chapter makes recommendations on how teachers can enhance students' reflective skills and learning strategies within the classroom, encouraging them to self-monitor, be persistent and take personal responsibility for their learning. It is important that learners understand the purpose of what teachers are trying to achieve and that reflection skills are explicitly taught. The primary aim was to help learners to use feedback to improve their pronunciation and fluency of te reo. The introduction of technology was a powerful tool for reflection on their pronunciation as they could listen to what they had recorded. This chapter concludes the following possibilities: perhaps the learner was taking personal ownership of learning, being self-motivated, goal orientated and focused on improving pronunciation.
