ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to understand the relationship between the adoption of mobile phones by the major Indigenous groups and number of other variables. The term Indigenous indicates people who are the original inhabitants of a given territory, i.e., people who were there before the currently dominant ethnic group arrived or before the establishment of state borders. Indigenous people in Nepal predominately inhabit rural areas and are primarily engaged in subsistence agriculture. In order to understand differences in the use of mobile phones among Indigenous groups it is useful to look at social, cultural and anthropological aspects. Overall the percentage of mobile phone usage by Indigenous people in Nepal is similar to the usage by non-Indigenous people. The Central Bureau of Statistics in Nepal conducted the Population and Housing Census 2011, which collected information on access to mobile phones at household level. Socio-economic status is overall measurement that characterizes the economic and social position of an individual or family within society.
