ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ideological and cultural implications of the use of mobile technologies by the Cherokee people. The Cherokee had developed a syllabary to express language in written form, but modern developments show this syllabary spreading through all kinds of technologies. The use of mobile technologies functions as an intentional way for the Cherokee people to decolonize their experience. The ideological critique simply looked to see how much the Cherokee language is used in mobile technologies and communications. An academic term to describe the mixture of cultures is cultural hybridity, which simply means that culture constantly changes and morphs under the influences of competing cultures. The literature about the purposes and cultural importance of the Cherokee syllabary tends to focus upon the idea of cultural perseverance or the idea of holding onto what is left of original Cherokee culture and language. The Cherokee language and culture exhibits resilience in the face of colonizing influences.
