ABSTRACT

This chapter examines uses of technology in Native American language revitalization. It also seeks to document one specific example of use of technology in cultural and linguistic preservation and perpetuation, the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma and its citizens. American Indian Tribes and Native American individuals are using digital technologies in cultural language preservation. Chickasaw citizens unaffiliated with the Chickasaw Nation Government are very active and have created their own language learning tools via such social media outlets as Google plus Groups, Google Hangouts, YouTube and Facebook. Meanwhile, Native American individuals are using social media, especially Facebook groups, Google+ Groups, Twitter and YouTube in increasingly high numbers to interact in and learn tribal languages, in many cases bridging the gap between elders and youth via technology. Native communities have always embraced new technologies; thus the venture of American Indian Tribes into new media, mobile and Internet technologies is a natural area for expansion.
