ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the various chapter of this book. This book reveals a dynamic embracing of mobile technologies by Indigenous people. Most Indigenous communities until recently had no exposure to mobile technologies. The mobile revolution, created by low-cost connectivity allied with cheap, smart mobile devices, has allowed underserved people to become connected. Communities are being transformed by applying mobile technologies to social and economic development in areas such as health, education and business. Keeping the connection with family and friends is the primary function as it keeps community and cultural links active and is vital for retaining Indigenous identity. Phones allow the transfer of funds and payment of bills, completion of government forms and communication for work. They provide mobile learning, including distance educational solutions for people in remote regions. Self-esteem is being enhanced through cultural and linguistic mobile applications both informally and formally.
