ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the question of what knowledge teachers need in order to integrate technology into their science teaching in ways that might help students learn science and prepare them for future work in scientific fields. It examines the general idea of pedagogical content knowledge in science and how it has been defined and used. The chapter then examines the uses of technology in science education, and teachers' knowledge for teaching science with technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) in science. Teachers' knowledge of technology, science, and pedagogy comes together in knowing 'where' to use technology, 'what' technology to use, and 'how' to teach with it. No matter what technologies are used or what topics are taught, the goal can be to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to try new technologies and to learn from their own experience; to anticipate problems that may arise and to persist in using technology in ways that support their students' learning.
