Such texts pose special challenges for translators. The translation of Thomas Mann’s tetralogy by Solomon Apt is a fine example of this kind of work.177 As his editor, I followed Apt’s work and witnessed that only after finishing volume four did the translator feel he had developed an adequate stylistic approach, and then found it necessary to re-translate the first volume. It is a telling episode, indeed!
