ABSTRACT

Preparing relevant contextual adjustment materials depends on identifying contextual mismatches accurately and building contextual bridges between the first and secondary audience’s mutual cognitive environments. This chapter provides a case study of this process using John 13:1-30. I explore the contextual assumptions the text evoked for the first-century Jews I then compare the assumptions evoked for the first audience with those evoked for the Adioukrou. I propose contextual adjustment materials and then measure the impact of those materials on comprehension. The text in Modes 2 and 3 appear at the end of the chapter. Appendixes A-C provide a similar analysis of the three other Gospel passages I used in my field research.
