ABSTRACT
This chapter proposes a systematic and replicable model for the analysis of original texts and their translations, within the framework of descriptive translation studies. It also describes a model within the framework of Toury's descriptive approach but which proposes a specific, systematic and replicable means for the analysis of source text (ST)-target text (TT) pairs, and locate and compare both texts within their own sociocultural context. The actual workings of this model bring together ideas and tools from systemic functional linguistics, corpus linguistics with and an analysis of the cultural context. The type-token ratio, an indication of the variety of lexis in the text, has long been known to vary according to text length. The chapter stresses the flexibility of the model: by examining the relative markedness of the metafunctional profile of text pairs adjustment can be made for languages that are differently structured.
