ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a case study involving a course type that is widely used in translator education curricula, ostensibly as a forum for involving students in the 'practice' of translation: the translation exercise class. The class portrayed here was the first one offered that was consistently organized around constructivist principles. It represents the first stage in the participatory action research project initiated at the author's institution that was designed to develop practical applications of the emerging constructivist approach toward the empowerment of translation students. It will be valuable to include real projects like the one observed in the chapter whenever possible in order to provide students with authentic work experience. If the project is a simulated one, there is no real client, and no real social partner to specify the readership, to clarify intent, to provide a real deadline for submission, or to assess the quality of the completed job.
