ABSTRACT
The main focus in my research is on how people understand each other in the Belgian asylum procedure. Discursive constructions of what counts as reality occupy a central place in this and I have framed my investigation within a theory of communication that analyses sense-making processes from the perspective of mobility across social spaces. In this chapter I shall put the findings of the data analysis into perspective. Going beyond the analysis of concrete individual cases it is my intention to uncover systematically recurring discursive patterns in the data, to situate these patterns within the broader field of research into language and mobility and to address some of the implications for the evaluation of asylum seekers’ cases.
