ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the basic concepts behind the language technologies. It shows the operating procedures of two of the market-leading products, the translation memory system Translator's Workbench by Trados, and the localization tool Catalyst by Corel. Translation memory systems and software localization tools are designed to increase translation productivity by automating the linguistic transfer from source to target text. Translation memories are also a core function of the most recent category of CAT tools: software localization tools. Localization, often referred to as L10N, describes the process of adapting a product to the specific situation of its target market. The main function of these tools is the translation/localization of user interfaces (UI), some of them also include project management and software engineering features. The chapter explains the main features of Corel Catalyst, which, along with several other applications such as Loc@le or Passolo, is probably the most multi-faceted of the localization tools available today.
