ABSTRACT

As a way of helping you to understand the potential challenges involved in translating specific texts as well as developing a methodology for analysing texts, this chapter presents a selection of typical scientific and technical texts that you are likely to encounter as a translator. By examining the features of each text type you will have a better idea of what to expect when you translate it. The first two examples are accompanied by detailed profiles which identify the subject, audience, text function, key features and potential problems as well as a variety of strategies for dealing with them. Using these sample profiles as a starting point, you can then complete the document profiles for the remaining texts. Appendix 4 contains sample profiles for the remaining documents, which you can use for additional information once you have created your own profiles.
