ABSTRACT

The term dependency has passed into disuse over the last decade after being in the limelight of developmental psychological research during the 1950s and 1960s (e.g., Beller, 1955; Gewirtz, 1954, 1956, 1961; Hartup, 1963; Heathers, 1955; Kagan & Moss, 1962; Sears, Maccoby, & Levin, 1957; Sears, Whiting, Nowlis, & Sears, 1953). In hindsight three developments may be regarded as liable for the term's demise.
