ABSTRACT

This introduction chapter describes the domination of hegemonic cultural system of the Indian sub-continent, shaping the consciousness and life experiences of Indians in various ways. Caste hierarchy structures India's social, cultural, economic, political systems, and in each case discriminates against individuals of lowest caste, known as dalit. Despite the lip-service paid to egalitarianism and equality in Indian society, prejudice and segregation is the part of the dalit experience. Dalit communities got continue restriction in their access to social benefits such as education, which in turn restricts their wider participation in Indian society and limits their opportunities in life. Dalit access into socio-eco-political spheres continues to be a daunting task for the Indian government. The dalit continue to experience social discrimination, which includes being refused access to goods, services and learning institutions by both individuals and governmental bodies. The dalit issue has become an international concern, the First World Convention being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 1998.
