ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some different aspects of embodiment and how it is possible to make sense of physical activities that might take one 'out of the body' and create a feeling of transcendence. It focuses on what is meant by Being in the Zone (Bitz) and what kind of theoretical explanations might be offered for the experience. The chapter presents the example of the experience of Bitz to explore the temporal, corporeal and social aspects of the experience and to suggest an alternative way of looking at bodies and embodiment through the concept of being enfleshed. The idea of 'Bitz' offers some puzzles, especially in relation to explanations of what is going on. The experience seems to be personal and psychological. Time and temporality and the social meanings of time are also central to understanding the zone as a social and cultural phenomenon.
