ABSTRACT

The Annual Conference of Cruse Bereavement Care was held at the Institute of Education in London. Virginia Bottomley MP was giving an excellent paper during the morning when a call came through from the Foreign Office requesting to mobilise a team of volunteer counsellors to go to New York to support the 200+ British citizens who had lost people in the disaster. Most of the planning of the team is done in the Incident Room, a large L-shaped room one half of which can be used for briefings, writing reports and so forth while the other houses the duplicator, shredder, two laptops, printer and so forth. Fortunately the prevailing wind is from the east and the only smell was of dust but the atmosphere was oppressive and it was with a sense of relief that they escaped from the disaster area to relax and recover our composure on the Staten Island Ferry.
