ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that new digital tools of dream analysis, if well designed and appropriately deployed, have the potential to make it easier for therapists to understand and benefit from their clients' dreams. It illustrates how the system of digital analysis can be applied to the dreams of people who are going through some kind of psychological crisis or emotional difficulty. The chapter discusses three brief case studies: a depressed young man; a middle-aged woman with relationship problems; and a young woman with bouts of severe anxiety. It utilizes Sleep and Dream Database (SDDb) to explore various collections of dreams, big sets of dreams from demographically diverse populations, long series of dreams from individuals over many years, and classic collections of dreams used by other researchers, past and present. The chapter concludes with thoughts about future developments in these case studies and their most promising applications in clinical practice.
