ABSTRACT

Motivating struggling learners includes working with diverse groups of students, ranging from those who are just learning to speak the language to those who are gifted. This chapter looks at ways to work with specific groups of students. Each group has unique characteristics, but there are strategies one can use to make a difference; it truly depends on whether one wants to take the time to best meet their needs. Autism is a part of many teachers' lives through the students they teach. Autism is a brain disorder in which communication and interaction with others are difficult. High-functioning autism (HFA) is at one end of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) spectrum. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that appears in young children. The chapter also deals with the strategies for English Language Learners, students who do not have English as their native language.
