ABSTRACT

Student engagement is interrelated with student motivation. A very important aspect of engaging struggling learners is to help them work and grow from their strengths. To appropriately engage struggling students, one should activate their understanding. Kendra Alston uses LINK Strategy for her struggling students. Missy Miles uses an alternative approach to assessing background knowledge by asking students to share their knowledge on a specific topic. By verbally acknowledging each sticky note, all students feel as though they have contributed to the background knowledge board. Another way to build student engagement is to group students for collaborative activities. Finally, to engage students, elicit their involvement in learning. One specific way to elicit involvement is to capitalize on students' interests in technology. Technology-based activities are always dependent on the resources that people have. There are a variety of technology-based activities can be used to motivate struggling learners; and new and engaging tools emerge every day.
