ABSTRACT

Ghana is now touted as one of the fastest growing developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa with an impressive GDP growth rate of 8" in recent times. This chapter focuses on Ghana to create a knowledge base for a deeper understanding of the opportunities and threats that exist for using the industry as the engine for engendering growth and job creation in the wider Ghanaian economy. The chapter provides overviews of the Ghana as an emerging economy, the emerging economic outlook of the Ghanaian construction industry, and the governance and institutional landscape of the Ghanaian construction sector. Next, employment opportunities and key market niches are examined. In Ghana, the residential sub-sector represents the greatest opportunity for growth and job creation, especially in the private sector. A framework for understanding and isolating economic, technological and structural demands (ETSDs) is then developed here, which is used for evaluating the ETSDs.
