ABSTRACT

The term 'trauma' includes the sense of an experience too terrible to put into words. For Freud, the trauma of bereavement is typical: Reality-testing has shown that the loved object no longer exists, and it proceeds to demand that all libido shall be withdrawn from its attachments to that object. Sympathy and explanation do not in themselves change the nature of the brute reality they address, in this instance the unthinkable possibility of planetary ecological collapse. The wealth of toxic materials in waste electronics, from toner cartridges to old CRTs, making their illegal way to these dumps include Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), lead, zinc, cadmium, arsenic and many others. Eco-fascism declares a state of emergency suspending all other considerations in the interests of meeting the crisis. A core lesson of scientific ecology, especially in the age of anthropogenic climate change, is the intertwining of all forms of life.
