ABSTRACT

Medical photographs have been used for the education of medical professionals and as part of medical records. Offering important visual information, images have an integral role in improving treatment and teaching doctors (Creighton, Alderson, Brown, & Minto, 2002). However, in the case of intersex individuals, medical photographs may do more harm than good. Ostensibly created for educational purposes and to improve treatment, the images function to demonstrate deviation from the norm . The photographs depict unwanted physical manifestations of intersexuality. Their realism makes them seem neutral; however, they are embedded within specifi c cultural contexts. As such, the medical photographs of intersex individuals are best understood by investigating the context of contemporary medicine.
