ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the experiences and perspectives of sex offenders and staffs who is located in a specialist sex offender treatment prison in England. It focuses on the participants' experiences of the prison, i.e. its regime and climate. The chapter explores how the prison differs from other prisons. Understanding such experiences will add to current understandings of the risks and benefits associated with co-locating sexual offenders, and will illuminate the type of prison environments most conducive for sex offender rehabilitation. Evidence from the therapeutic community (TC) literature highlights the importance of context and the environment for offender rehabilitation. Jensen and Kane found that completing a sentence in a TC had a significant effect on reducing the likelihood of rearrest for prisoners. Data were analysed using thematic analysis; a method for identifying, analysing and reporting patterns and themes within a data set. The chapter aims to capture rich detail and represent the range and diversity of experience within data.
