ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how Asian-American students became a model minority in the U.S., and what the facts, myths and issues are faced by some Asian-American students. The chapter further provides suggestions for school personnel to break down the model minority myth associated with Asian-American students and to create system-wide supports that can help all Asian-American students to achieve success in school. Some Asian-American students struggle academically, socially, and emotionally, educators generally discount the idea that these students may have academic and mental health issues. To discredit the model minority stereotype of Asian-American students, all students and staff at the school setting should receive racial and cultural awareness and sensitivity training. Schools should also consider School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) to assist struggling Asian students. A culturally competent multi-tiered SWPBS model includes mental health strategies, and its implementation requires intensive school personnel training.
