ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impact of globalization on teaching and learning for creativity. Educational environments that support and nurture children's creativity are built on trusting relationships among the teacher and the students, as well as freedom for both the teacher and the student to make decisions in the classroom. The chapter explores the contradiction with the dual lenses of democracy and social justice as each relates to education. First, the lens of democracy and education helps us critically examine the globalized market rhetoric that has been used to shape current education policy and obstructs teachers' ability to teach for creativity. Second, the lens of social justice and education helps us to understand the potential power of technological innovations for social change and empowerment as it relates to the development of creativity in children and youth who have been marginalized. The chapter describes the negative impact of standardized tests.
