ABSTRACT

The extent to which any of us can offer another unconditional positive regard relies directly on our ability to accept ourselves. Even though most of us embark upon training in person-centred therapy thinking of ourselves as accepting people, because of this, unconditional positive regard is the hardest of the therapeutic attitudes to develop. It cannot be effectively faked and tolerance (the ability to patiently endure or allow something) is no substitute. What we need to be effective in the role of person-centred therapist is positive self-regard.
