ABSTRACT

Transportation management has taken systematic advantage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures for the collection and communication of data about the flow of people and vehicles. Today traditional data collection performed by operators through sensors or cameras also relies on a widespread diffusion of personal devices providing detailed information about the position of users in space and time. Moreover, these same devices enable users to get real-time information about transport conditions from both the transportation authority and other users. This possibility of multiple way communication is at the core of so-called intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which are contributing to the solution of various transportation issues. The design and adoption of sustainable transportation systems in natural and protected areas are still a distinctive trait of affluent countries with well-established tourism industries. There is a common understanding today that sustainable development ultimately depends on people ability to protect ecosystems and the services they provide.
