ABSTRACT

This chapter explores to offer a general survey, little more than a preliminary sketch, of what a particular kind of "food utopia" might look like. It focuses on the ecology and economics might well be seen as the twin pillars supporting the agroecology eutopia. The chapter discusses some of the "utopian" aspects of the work of the Land Institute, with special emphasis on how that work aims to transform agriculture. It also suggests how that work can be viewed in a much larger "directional context"; for this, the chapter provides a very rough sketch of a possible eutopia that would revolve around that alternative agriculture. The chapter discusses "global agroecology eutopia" in order to emphasize the fact that any such projected future needs to encompass the world as a whole; and needs to embrace an ecologically sound approach to life on earth, both human life and the lives and well-being of other species as well.
