ABSTRACT

The urbanizing of Asia has led to the need for cooling load to reduce the environmental impact of urbanization. In Japan, the majority of energy consumed in non-residential buildings is for lighting and ventilation. In this chapter, the possible reductions in cooling load are compared to determine whether natural ventilation can be used or not in each building block. Therefore, we use the Urban Climate Simulation System (Ashie and Vu 2004) to calculate the outdoor temperature and wind velocity in part of a building block using a canopy model. By considering the results, we were able to find a way to mitigate urban heat stress via spatial planning.
