ABSTRACT

This chapter describes common editorial practices such as the calculation of acceptance rates, impact factors and their interpretations, and general issues concerning the reliability, validity, and fairness of reviews. We detail the responsibilities of editors and authors, how editors make decisions, and the typical operations of editorial offices. Among the more important issues are the composition of decision letters on the part of editors and how authors can best respond to requests for a revision and resubmission. By understanding these issues, authors can avoid unnecessary errors in the preparation of manuscripts and improve the chance of favorable outcomes.
