ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses on the analysis of how history, policies, economics, education, and technology have shaped parenting in contemporary China. It focuses some remarks on research and reality of contemporary Chinese parenting. The chapter illustrates the dynamics of interdependence and independence in contemporary Chinese parenting with ample evidence from recent research conducted in Mainland China. Parents in China nowadays dynamically adopt parenting behaviors oriented toward interdependence or independence when raising their children, driven by their values, goals, and beliefs. The aspects of independence-oriented parenting-socialization endeavors to cultivate self-reliance vs. individuality in children. The task of parenting and the ever-changing world are too complicated for contemporary Chinese parents to adopt any single kind of simplistic and rigid "tiger parenting". Parents need to be open to diverse ideologies and be flexible to use diverse socialization tools when trying to raise their children into well-functioning members in today's society.
