ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the impact of recent education reforms on the role of governors through tracing the following developments. It traces the developments it have observed the links between the micro practices shaping the conduct of governors and the broader, macro changes occurring at the level of the state and its developing relationship with the market. The book examines the impact of these macro changes on the day-to-day practices of governors, specifically the new freedoms and responsibilities assigned to governors to operate outside the control of local government. It presents the economic and political rationalities through which governors perform their role; it highlights the conditions underpinning the freedom to govern schools. The technical bureaucratic function of school governance to someone, somewhere else and call it something else altogether and create new definitions and practices of what it means to be a governor and an engaged citizen.
