ABSTRACT

Wood is one of the most important raw materials for IKEA. It is by far the largest raw material by volume. Wood has properties that make it a highly functional choice for home furnishing products in the IKEA range. IKEA sources wood in approximately 50 countries around the world. Close to two-thirds of the volume is sourced in the European Union (EU). In 1994, IKEA participated in the founding of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). IKEA introduced forestry requirements for its products for the first time. The nature of an operation integrated upstream to logs is that it is part of the diverging part of the value chain and basically creates value by cutting and sorting. It distinguishes between material used in IKEA solid wood products, material sold to other customers and by-products. The more of the material that could be used in IKEA furniture, the less diverging is the flow of wood out from the main product flow.
