ABSTRACT

Many parents and caregivers need support both to effectively protect and guide their children as they navigate adolescence, and also to define and communicate their values and expectations about sexual behavior. The Families Matter! Program (FMP) is an evidence-based intervention for parents and caregivers of 9-12-yearolds in sub-Saharan Africa that promotes positive parenting practices and effective parent-child communication about sex-related issues and sexual risk reduction (Miller et al., 2013). FMP was adapted for use in Kenya from a U.S. evidencebased intervention in 2003-2004. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now provide technical support for its implementation in eight African countries, where it has been delivered to over 400,000 families.
