ABSTRACT

Introduction It would be reasonable to hypothesize that bosses, employers, call them what you will, would rather have nothing to do with unions, those organizations that pursue the collective interests of workers. Employers would prefer to negotiate wages and other employment conditions on an individual basis, maintaining that the involvement of unions in such matters adversely affects their ‘special’ relationship with their workforce. Workers form unions because of the belief, or hope, that by acting collectively they will gain improvements to their working lives not available to them under individual bargaining. Such suppositions apply as much to the world of professional team sports as other areas of commercial life.
