ABSTRACT

The provision of open spaces, parks, plazas, playgrounds, promenades and more, are a key element of cities and especially of urban redevelopment. Bikeways play a unique role in urban redevelopment; they are a form of transportation, personal and family recreation and healthy exercise. Community facilities are a key element in urban revitalization, and arts venues, theaters, museums and galleries, artist work-live lofts, are all cultural features that along with parks strongly support urban redevelopment projects. Educational and medical institutions, often deeply rooted in their communities, have often played a key role in urban redevelopment. Completed in 1975, Gas Works in Seattle remains an innovative and iconic restoration of a former brownfield into a city park. Lakewood, a suburb of Denver in Colorado, used a combination of green infrastructure, Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and brownfield restoration all to trigger urban redevelopment. MASS MoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, is an extraordinary example of arts and culture leading urban revitalization.
