ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses strategic issues and challenges in Caribbean tourism, as well as the CTO's role in Caribbean tourism development. The reliance placed on tourism in the region makes it important that all Caribbean states cooperate to deal with the threats that currently face the industry. The Caribbean, of course, welcomes the fact that it is the most popular area in the world for the operation of cruise ships. While there are many fine hotels in the Caribbean, there is a danger of the hotel subsector as a whole becoming uncompetitive. The Caribbean is a mature tourism destination, where a few of its national entities have been in the business for almost fifty years, and others for thirty years and more. In today's competitive environment, especially in tourism where each country is competing at a world level. The Caribbean has failed miserably to maximize the possibilities for supplying the tourism sector from goods and services produced in the Caribbean.
