ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the journey of the emerging practitioner with regards to supervision, a journey that progresses from learning about the role of a supervisee in terms of understanding and using supervision to that of an effective and competent supervisor of others. It focuses on individual supervision between a line manager and practitioner because this is by far the most common form of supervision. The chapter explores what is meant by supervision, its purpose and functions, models, skills and the fundamental importance of the supervisory relationship. Within a work context, the use of supervision varies across professions and it encapsulates a number of allied tasks and relationships. The key purpose of supervision is to develop capable professional practitioners. A willingness to prepare for and engage with the learning journey referred to at the beginning rewarded by personal and professional growth.
