ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the standpoints, concepts and practices that seem to be central to Kuan-Hsing Chen's thought and provides some beginning explanations of them. It also includes Chen's particular notions of translation, base entity, cultural imaginary and critical syncretism. People tasks were to understand Chen's main ideas, and how they might be useful in education studies to clarify the potential difficulties and limitations of work for educational researchers. When people read Chen's Asia as Method, they were excited because it inspired them to try to develop a fresh research imagination, this thought might help them to clarify and address their concerns about 'East and West' in education studies. There is great deal more to Chen's method than is implied in such critiques of the work. The chapter discusses Chen's driving imperatives and other Chen-related dictates, deliberating on author experiences of working together to write this book and on some of the challenges that arose.
