ABSTRACT

We were inspired to start this project after spending years observing and interviewing women fans in Barclays Premier League (United Kingdom). As part of that experience, we began to realize that women fans are not adequately represented in the world of sport fandom, neither in the stands nor in academic literature. During the five years we have specifically worked in the United States, we have been thrilled to see more and more academic research focusing on understanding the experiences and perceptions of women fans. Unfortunately, that work typically continues to focus on how women can be measured and categorized as fans, often using the same instruments and scales created by—and for—the archetypal male fan.
