ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the steps involved in getting a teaching job, and discusses the steps to be followed before applying for jobs, as it is important to recognise that recruitment is a two-way process; it is more akin to match-making than a straight contest. Head teachers will want people who will enjoy working in their school; Really, there is no ideal candidate; everyone is different, and there is no mould for an outstanding teacher. As well as their responses at interview, their record of training, their academic background and the range of their relevant professional experience will influence the assessment. In preparing for an interview, it is wise to think through potential questions in advance, so that one does not appear surprised by them. Clearly, the more real experience one have of these things, the easier it will be to give good answers. Try to select one or two key ideas to explain in the lesson and focus on them.
