ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses there are many types and sizes of milling machines, but the most versatile in common use in the majority of workshops is the knee-and-column type, so called because the spindle is fixed in the column or main body and the table arrangement, mounted on a knee, is capable of movement in the longitudinal, transverse and vertical directions. The spindle, accurately mounted in precision bearings, provides the drive for the milling cutters. There are many different types of milling cutters available, and for convenience they can be classified according to the method of mounting: those with a central hole for mounting on an arbor, those with a screwed shank for holding in a special chuck and the large facing cutters which mount directly on to the spindle nose. Angle cutters are available, made with single angle or double angle with teeth on the angled surfaces.
