ABSTRACT

Introduction Employment is the vehicle through which a country’s economic growth is transferred to its citizens. The tourism sector, which already constitutes one in every eleven jobs around the world (United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) 2014a), is widely acknowledged as a key source of employment opportunities in both developed and developing countries. As such, national governments have pursued tourism as a high-potential economic growth option, and the employment it creates as a way of ensuring that economic growth translates into poverty reduction among those most in need.
