ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to concern with ways in which the profession can retrofit itself collectively to strategically manage the risk of continual economic, social, environmental and technical change, something that will require new professional mindsets. 'The practices of architects, like other urban design professionals, are implicated in the construction of risky objects and their mitigation by recourse to systems of managerial governance'. ZCD Architects were able to scale up from individual home design to larger housing developments based largely on the research activity of Dinah Bornat in the field of community space for children. Most importantly architects need to have a very clear idea about the work they are ready and prepared to undertake and should think twice about taking on a client whose values do not align with practice strategy. Architects have much to learn from the large businesses that have entire teams working on 'customer experience'.
