ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the answer for questions: So what is an architect? The difference between architecture and building is often used as a means to describe the distinct skillsets of architects and builders, most usually in aesthetic terms. Architects are paid roughly the same as other types of designer, but their training generally takes far longer and they carry heavier professional responsibilities. In the UK the title Architect is legally protected but there is no protection of function. If non-architects are to engage with architects, they need to know with whom they are dealing. It is helpful in this context to reframe the activities of architects in terms of the benefits that they bring in a language that non-architects can use. The category 'Technological Architect' was included in Demystifying Architectural Research as a means to disseminate specifically technological research but it is omitted here. The role of architects in the spatializing of change should not be underestimated.
